SCOOBA – When the call came, Dr. Thomas Huebner was standing on the pitcher’s mound at a ball field in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His son’s team had just won in extra innings. He looked down at the phone in his hand, and answered as he scanned the bleachers for his wife’s face.
It was Kathy Dyess, chairman of East Mississippi Community College’s board of trustees, and the news was good.
The EMCC Board named Huebner as president of the college Monday night during a regular meeting. Currently serving as dean of student services at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Huebner will succeed Dr. Rick Young, who retires June 30 after 11 years leading the college.
Huebner will assume his new position July 1.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Huebner as president of East Mississippi Community College. Even though he has very large shoes to fill, we are confident that he will lead EMCC into a bright new future,” Dyess said.
“Dr. Huebner has experience in virtually every area of community college administration, including instruction, student life, fund-raising, workforce development, grant-writing, institutional effectiveness, marketing, enrollment, facilities management, athletics and accreditation.”
Huebner has been a leader at Shelton State for five years, and also served as interim president of Bevill State Community College in Jasper, Ala., from April 2014 to January 2015. Before moving to Alabama to be closer to family in Mississippi, Huebner served as vice president at Logan State University in Chesterfield, Mo., and Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn.
“I’ve known about EMCC’s outstanding reputation for a long time, and I was so impressed with the people I met when I visited the Golden Triangle and Scooba campuses last week,” Huebner said. “I’m excited to be a part of that community.”
Huebner is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo., where he earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in communication and English. He received his master’s degree in communication from the University of Georgia, and his doctorate in communication, with a doctoral minor in research methods, from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Huebner’s plan when he arrives at EMCC is straightforward: “I’m going to listen. I want to get to know people – faculty, staff, students, members of the community. I want to get a feel for our strengths and challenges. Then we’ll move forward together. But first, I’m going to listen and learn.”
East Mississippi Community College was founded in 1927. The college has two main campuses, located in Scooba and Mayhew, as well as extension locations in its six-county district, which includes Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay, Noxubee, Kemper and Lauderdale counties.
