Smoke detectors are a vital resource in any home, but many aren’t taking advantage.

Oktibbeha County Fire Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said he recently watched a home without a smoke detector burn to the ground.

The residents made it out unharmed, but it could have been a different story.

Check your batteries and if you need a smoke detector check with your local fire department.

Many departments give them away.

Rosenhan said firefighters even go door to door handing out the smoke detectors.
