Snake Bites Child At Birmingham Zoo

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Officials say a child was bitten by a copperhead snake at the Birmingham Zoo.

Local news media report that Zoo spokesman Clark Maxwell says the child was bit by a wild snake around noon Thursday near the Trails of Africa exhibit, but wasn’t a part of their animal collection. The condition of the child is unknown.

The child was transported to the Children’s of Alabama for treatment.

The snake has been captured and relocated by zoo staff for examination.

Zoo officials said in a news release that they are working with the hospital to determine the appropriate treatment for the child.
