South Side Elementary School no longer under lockout

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – A West Point school was under a lockout as police searched for a suspect who was reportedly trying to break into a car on campus.

It happened this morning at South Side Elementary School. This is West point police say they’re looking for Demarcus White, 22.

Assistant superintendent Jermaine Taylor said the school’s resource officer chased the suspect, but was not able to apprehend him. The officer suffered a broken arm during the chase.

Meanwhile, the school was under a lockout while police search a nearby wooded are. This means exterior doors of the building are locked and outside recess is suspended until police clear the scene.

Taylor said the suspect never entered the building and the students and staff are safe.

White is wanted on charges car burglary and simple assault on a law enforcement officer.
