Starkville Approves Contract With Group For The Proposed Oktibbeha Gardens National Historic District And Survey

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A local neighborhood is another step closer to becoming a ‘historic site.’

It would be national recognition of Starkville’s history.

It’s a process that would place Oktibbeha Gardens on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mayor and board of aldermen approved the company Tuesday night that will come and evaluate the area.

It will move on to the state level after that. The city got a grant this spring for the evaluation.

A state specialist has said official word on the designation could come from the federal level as early as this coming summer.

People know the area for its post-World War II homes.
