Starkville detective receives hometown hero award

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- A Starkville man gets a surprise at the city’s Board of Alderman meeting.

Detective Bill Lott was awarded the Modern Woodmen of America Hometown Hero award for his role in the investigation of the 1990 Labor Day murders.

After years of work, his efforts led to an arrest in October.

Lott spoke on how it feels to be honored and recognized by those in the community for his work.

“I feel blessed. I’ve always loved this community. Fell in love with this community. I’m not from here but I’ve lived here more of my life than anywhere else and it’s home to me now. This is where I live my life and want to be. I want to give back to my community, and I’m grateful my community recognized me for doing something I’d do for free,” said Lott.

Lott started working the cold case in the early 2000’s.
