STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A Starkville High School student that took a chance reaps a big award.

Mary Kate Hughes submitted an audition of her voice through an Mp3 player to the American Choral Director’s Association national office in Oklahoma to demonstrate the range her vocal cords. Mary Kate’s audition was accepted for the National ACDA Honor Choir.

“I recorded scales, recorded ‘ My Country Tis of Thee,’ and just sent in the audition to the website and hoped for the best,” said Mary Kate Hughes.

” Mary Kate is an exceptionally talented young lady, she has a phenomenal voice,” said her choral director Regina Weeks.

Hughes will travel to Dallas, Texas where she will rehearse with other winners from across the nation March 13th through the 16th.

Hughes is a lead singer in the Starkville High School Singers.
