Starkville High School Girls Get A Unique Opportunity

STARKVILLE Miss. (WCBI) – A non-profit organization is making sure local high school girls get a dress for prom.

“I really wasn’t going to go to prom till this opportunity opened up,” said Starkville high school senior Kimiya Brown.

What started out as some early spring cleaning sparked a creative way to make prom night special for local high school girls.

“I was cleaning out my closet over Christmas break and I was thinking these dresses could be used to give someone else joy. I’m excited to have a team that’s ready to give out all these dresses and give some hope to girls that need it,” said Dresses For Hope director Taylor Parsons.

Taylor Parsons is the director of Dresses for Hope and a student at Mississippi State. She chose the city of Starkville because it’s invested so much in her.

“Starkville’s given Mississippi State so much and so we’re so grateful for the opportunity to give back in this way. We’re looking forward to giving these girls the opportunity to go to prom. Some of them this is their only chance to get a dress,” said Parsons.

Brown says without this opportunity, prom wouldn’t have fit in her budget.

“Senior fees is a lot and then we have lab fees and all these things. A lot of people can’t afford this stuff. It just opens up the bases because a lot of people just threw it out, Oh I cant go to prom because I have to pay for class so now that they have this opportunity it maybe changed their opinions,” said Brown.

Starkville High School Intern Hannah Broom says they’ve got the community to thank.

“The really awesome thing is that since the dresses come from the community you get a little bit of everything. Instead of going to one store only offering the styles that are the hottest right then and just a few selections there are literally almost 400 dresses that are completely different from each other,” said Broom.

Brown says she’s excited to pick out the perfect dress, whether it came with a big ticket or not.

“I just want a lot of people to know just because you a dress for free doesn’t mean your dress is not high quality, these dresses are amazing,” said Brown.

This is the first year for the organization but Parsons says the hope to do it again and reach many more girls.

“We’d love to continue in the coming years if possible but we would love to go beyond Starkville high school but right now we’re excited for Starkville High School and all that today’s going to bring to us and to these girls,” said Parsons.
