Starkville Residents Prepare For Halloween

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-  It seems like everybody is preparing for Halloween; from kids and parents to medical professionals.

Kristi Robertson, a nurse practitioner, says wardrobe malfunctions can be a cause of some serious problems.

“Being careful with costumes, making sure they’re not too long and won’t trip on them,” said Robertson. “Making sure that you try to do a patch test on face paint, stuff like that so you won’t have an allergic reaction to it that’s going to cause you to suffer more afterward, and then asthma keeping your inhaler with you when you’re out and about.”

Parents can also head off safety issues by coming up with a game plan ahead of time.

“We’re going to have some friends trick-or-treat with us ,” said Benko. “And just staying together staying close to the curb my two-year-old will be in a wagon so it’s important for him to stay in that wagon until we walk him to the doors.”

Parents are also finding unique ways to keep their kids visible in the dark.

“We talked also about just going up to doors and houses that are lit and not going to dark houses,” said Benko. “And then I’m going to give them glow sticks to wear around their neck and they’ll also be caring one of these so cars can see them and other kids and parents.”

Of course, it’s not all serious business. The Goal of all this planning is to have good, safe fun.

One family has been going all out for the past 20 years and continues to add to their Halloween decoration collection.

This doesn’t happen overnight though. Rodney Pearson says he preps three weeks before Halloween and adds something new every day.

“We really enjoy it,” said Pearson. “We’re outside and we meet the children and we seen a lot of children year after year after year and we see their whole families and they come and they seem to have a great time so it’s just a lot of fun for us.”
