Storms Cause Power Flashes in Winona

WINONA, Miss. (WCBI)- Storms raced through our area overnight causing damage in many areas.

Meteorologist Jacob Dickey was in the field reporting during Tuesday night’s severe weather.

In Winona, he caught this video of power flashes west of town on US-82.

These bright blue green flashes can occur when damaging winds knock down power lines.

The result is an arc of electricity caused by the shorted out wires.

Seeing these power flashes at night helps meteorologists confirm wind damage, especially at night.

There were over 30 reports of wind damage ranging from trees and powerlines being blown down to structural damage.

The damage from these storms was from straight line winds in excess of 60 mph.
