Student Athlete of the Week: Jack Wilson, East Webster HS, Football

[syndicaster id=’6008124′] CUMBERLAND, Miss. (WCBI) — Jack Wilson is a top 10 student in his class at East Webster High School and he won a State Championship in baseball back in the spring. Now he’s led his football team off to a 6 and 1 start to the season so far. WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo has more with this week’s student athlete of the week.

Jack Wilson has been a two sport athlete since the seventh grade at East Webster High School. He’s plays second base on the baseball team, and he’s the starting quarterback for the football team. Wilson also played basketball for two seasons as well. East Webster head coach Doug Wilson and Jack’s teammate Chase Keller have seen the leadership he’s brought to the team for the last four years.

“Just mental toughness. Just relentless effort that’s he going to give you everyday at practice, in the weight room. Ever since he’s been a seventh grade he’s worked hard,” said Head Coach Doug Wilson.

“He’s been a great leader to this team. We’ve been side by side and best friends ever since we started, so we really have a strong friendship I guess you could say. He really just helps us out,” said Teammate Chase Keller.

Wilson has been the starting quarterback for the last three years. Last season he led this team to the North-Half Final where the Wolverines were eventually defeated by division rival Calhoun City. He says it would mean a lot to the community if they can get past North-Half and play in the State Championship game for the first time since 2008.

“It would definitely mean a lot to the this community. Like I said everybody knows everybody. It’s a very close net community. So this year if were able to make, if we are able to get past our tough district and even make it to Oxford it would be an amazing experience,” said Student Athlete Jack Wilson.

Wilson is taking advanced courses in his senior year and carrying an overall 4.97 G-P-A. One of the classes he enjoys the most is History.

“I love different cultures you know going back to see how great leaders were. I love everything about the battles that America has fought and just learning about the countries that are around the world,” said Wilson.

Wilson’s football coach is proud of him for putting his academics first.

“He knows that his academics comes first and that’s the first and foremost important. That’s what he is going to make his living doing is a good academic background and grades have always been important to him and he’s excelled in the classroom and that’s one thing we are real proud of,” Wilson said.

Wilson has also not decided on where to go to college for his first two years to get his basics, but after getting his basics he wants to go to the Jackson Medical School. He also says following the day of graduation at East Webster his sights are set on what the Lord has called upon for him to do.

“After the day I graduate I want to be a Journeymen, which is through the international missions board so I’ll be going from country to country every two years to serve the Lord and I really fell that’s what he’s put in my life and that’s what he wants me to do,” Wilson said.

East Webster will look to get back on the winning track this Friday when they travel to Winona to take on the Tigers at 7pm.
