COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A second barge that was submerged at the Stennis Lock and Dam has been removed.

The “River Salvage Company”, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, pumped water out of the barge on Wednesday morning.

It was then moved away from the Columbus spillway.

Crews removed the other barge on Tuesday.

The barges have been there since the weekend after Christmas and have attracted crowds of people.

Now that the barges are gone, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have to make sure the gates are working properly.

“We’ll get a survey boat in and survey where the barges went down, just to make sure there wasn’t any scour in front of the spillway, and then later on in the year we’ll be able to dewater the gate and asses the damage,” said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Operations Manager Rick Saucer.

Repair work will not begin until this summer.
