Video: Tax Subsidy Not Approved To Assist One Incoming Business

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-The Starkville Mayor and Board of Aldermen voted not to approve a TIF  that would have assisted a new Neighborhood Walmart Market in coming to town.

The TIF is a subsidy and was worth a little over 1.3 million dollars in tax breaks.

The resolution failed in a four to three vote.

Ward 5 Alderman Scott Maynard then made a motion to cut the TIF amount in half to $675,000.

However, that motion also failed in a four to three vote.

Oktibbeha County approved the tax break Monday.

Ward 2 Alderwoman Lisa Wynn was in favor of both motions, was disappointed the motions failed.  She called Tuesday a “Sad sad day in Starkville.”

Representatives from the Neighborhood Walmart Market said they will be in touch with board members to possibly discuss another option moving forward with the project.
