Teacher turns math lesson into an “operating” room
CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- One West Clay Elementary teacher is getting creative when it comes to teaching math.
Mrs. Pumphrey’s 3rd and 4th graders got play surgeons and do math operations.
Two lessons in one, with the help of volunteers from real surgeons and surgical gear.
Students were operating different math problems with an emphasis on science.
Mrs. Pumphrey says it’s a fun way to get kids excited about math.
“It gave them a fun way to incorporate math. We read about science things in our centers and incorporated math in it about a heart beating 115,000 times a day. So, they learned science and math through doing these activities,” said Mrs. Pumphrey.
The surgical tools were donated by North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point and Tupelo.
