STURGIS, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s been three years since Sturgis hosted its annual Bike Rally, but this year it’s back.
Bikers from all over reunited in the small town this weekend to celebrate their love for motorcycles.
The sounds of motorcycles rumble through downtown Sturgis once again, as thousands of bikers return for the rally weekend.
Bikers like Olive Branch resident, Jeff Roberson, couldn’t wait to grab his handle bars and ride into Sturgis.
“The comradery and being able to come down and the parade ride and those things are always fun and just coming around and hanging around and walking around looking at different bikes and being able to meet new people,” says Jeff Roberson.
Roberson guessed fewer bikers would show up for the event, but was glad he was wrong.
“Thought it would be a little smaller crowd. Hopefully next year the vendors will come back. I know there is a real short of vendors this year but I think the crowd is bigger than we expected it being the first year back. I’m excited,” says Roberson.
In recent years, Sturgis hosts nearly 25,000 bikers in one weekend.
Even though the town has seen more than a thousand people this time, Board President Donny Hanson is satisfied with this year’s crowd.
“Our expectations for this year was to have at least a thousand people register and we did that on Friday so the rally board is in pretty good spirits,” says Donny Hanson.
Hanson believes this year is successful, but more work will have to be done for future rallies.
“We had to stop using the name Sturgis in the name of our event so it’s now called, “the Rally” until the board meets after this rally is over and we can come up with an official name whether it means we can use Sturgis or whether we cannot use Sturgis but for right now, thanks to Sturgis, South Dakota we’re not using the name right now,” says Hanson.
Roberson just hopes this year’s rally is a sign of more to come.
“We enjoy coming and hope that we can proceed with this rally for many years to come,” says Roberson.
The Jason Miller Band and Southern Halo were among the Saturday night performances.
