FULTON, Miss. (WCBI)-It can be difficult for those with disabilities to be independent without the proper access. That’s why one community is helping raise funds for a local family to do just that. Many families headed out on Saturday morning to check out local yard sales, but in the Fulton community there was one in particular with special meaning.

“We’re having a yard sale.” Okay, what are you having a yard sale for? “so we can have money for my new toilet,” says John Samuel Huckaby.

“We’re trying to make his house handicap accessible, have a special bathroom and ramps to get him in and out so he can be independent,” says Allison Huckaby.

Five year old, John Samuel Huckaby was born with Spina Bifida, a congenital defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord is exposed through a gap in the backbone. It often causes paralysis of the lower limbs, and sometimes mental handicap.

John’s mother Allison Huckaby not only wants him to have full access to do things on his own, but to learn how to be independent.

“When they’re that age they want to be doing things for themselves and we want to instill that early so that when he is a teenager and young adult he an take care of himself and doesn’t feel that dependent on other people,” says Huckaby.

Many folks throughout the community came out to purchase items to help raise funds…and in hopes to catch John singing his favorite song “I am Blessed”.

“He just sings his little heart out and he just has the happiest spirit and he’s typical little boy as far as he loves super heroes and you know he loves to play and he’s very special. My life is better just having meet him,” says Kelly Harrison.

Like Kelly Harrison many family and friends gathered to help out during the yard sale benefit for John.

Allison says the support from the community is overwhelming.

“It’s really special. He touches everybody he meets and we just love to see that in return. It means a lot,” says Huckaby.
