Video: Tourism Tax Vote

HOUSTON, Miss.(WCBI)

The City of Houston is placing the tourism tax back on the table for discussion. Voters will be able to decide whether a 2% tax will be applied and Houston City leaders hope out of the 2100 registered voters at least half will head to the polls. The tourism tax has been met with some opposition but Mayor Stacy Parker says they have a plan, the money generated from this tax will benefit not only the people of Houston but the city as a whole.

” We have a plan that distributes that money based off of the department of revenue that could be equivalent of 160,000, Parker says, “Based off of last years moneys still yet to be determined on what’s collected and what’s sent in.”

An advisory committee made up of 15 community members and business representatives is in place to help determine where the money is needed most. Voting takes place Tuesday June 21st from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
