Toyota Offers Summer Camps for Lee, Pontotoc, Union Kids

TUPELO, Miss. – The Toyota Wellspring Education Fund at the CREATE Foundation will pay tuition to a number of academic camps this summer for public school students in Lee, Pontotoc and Union counties.

In its second year, Dive Into Free Summer Academic Camps is funded by the Toyota Wellspring Education Fund and allows public school students to “dive into” various hobbies and trades at Mississippi State University, Itawamba Community College or Northeast Mississippi Community College. Camps are available in computer science, conservation, horticulture, advanced manufacturing and more.

Students in public schools in Lee, Pontotoc and Union counties may participate. Camps have varying age requirements ranging from 6th-12th grades (upcoming academic year).

As part of the awareness campaign, posters have been sent to area schools and churches urging students to participate in the program and to apply soon, as funding is limited, and applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We’re pleased to offer this program for the second time,” commented Mike Clayborne, president of CREATE. “We encourage students to take advantage of these camps to continue learning during the summer and to experience new ideas and new people.”

In 2007, Toyota committed to donate $50 million over a 10-year period to enhance public education in Lee, Pontotoc and Union counties. The Toyota gift is being made to an endowment fund at the CREATE Foundation, allowing the gift to benefit K-12 students in the three counties both now and in the future. Payable over a 10-year period, the goal of the gift is to create a perpetual fund to enhance education for students in the eight public school districts in the three counties.
