Train derailment shuts down Lowndes County roadway

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A train derailment shuts down a busy Lowndes County roadway.

Highway 789, near the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, was closed until the train cars could be removed.

It is now open.

Lowndes County Emergency Management Director Cindy Lawrence said the actual derailment occurred on the Steel Dynamics property.

Lawrence tells WCBI most of the cars were empty and there were no hazardous materials.

Three cars derailed.

No other information was available Wednesday morning.
