COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Since the opening in 1987, the trotter convention center has been a staple in the community. From fundraisers to our very own WCBI Bridal Show, it has been home to thousands of events. Over the past two years the trotter has undergone quite a face lift.

Columbus Mayor, Robert Smith says, ” This is not just a little touch up we are doing here on the trotter. It is a total new facelift. From the entry way all the way through the ballroom.”

The project began in 2013 and will be complete this very week. With an original price tag of 3.2 million dollars, the renovations came in well below budget with a final cost of 2.4 million. Contractors & officials not only stayed under budget, but also will complete the project before the projected finish date.

Renovations exceed cosmetic updates by fine-tuning the little perks that make a venue special.

“The new renovations will help attract more clients. The upgrades on lighting and the new painting and the new sound system. Now you will have a state of the are facility for major businesses to use,” says Major Andrews of Major Design Studio

One of the first events that will take place, is the 22nd annual WCBI & Columbus Main Street’s Bridal Show.

The Trotter has been home to the event many times before, but will be show casing a few new touches.

Derek Rogers, General Manager of WCBI-TV was quoted, “it’s got the state of the art sound system and its got the state of the art lighting, that even more people are going to want to book it for their events.

Officials hope the updates will attract even more people to the city. Mayor Robert Smith says some companies are already booking events for twenty-seventeen, nearly two years out.

Rogers goes on to say, ” The people will not be disappointed. It is going to be a showplace.”

Now, you may notice there is still construction being done on the 5th street entrance. This is expected to be completed by mid February.
