Tupelo Celebrates President’s Day Through Service

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Some Tupelo youngsters spent part of their President’s Day holiday sprucing up the city.

“Keep Tupelo Beautiful” organized a litter pickup initiative.

Volunteers signed up at Fairpark, received a safety vest, gloves, and trash grabbers, then headed out to areas such as Mill Village, Ballard Park and Gumtree Park, where they picked up trash.

Organizers say the idea is to instill in young people the value of service and an awareness about the effects of littering.

“When you drive down the road and see the litter on the side of the road, think about where you place your litter and make a difference in not just throwing it out the window, so the big thing is litter awareness, and in the grand scheme of things, get out and volunteer,” says Kathryn Rhea of Keep Tupelo Beautiful.

Keep Tupelo Beautiful will host a city wide cleanup day this spring.
