Uber drivers planning on a full house for New Years Eve

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- For some, New Years Eve means staying in with friends to celebrate, while for others it means going out to bring in the new year.

And some professional drivers in Starkville are taking notice.

Uber is a fairly new thing for the city of Starkville; however, residents, visitors and drivers have taken full advantage of this service.

Christopher Taylor is one driver that has seen a difference in Starkville since Uber came to town.

“I’ve seen it from two drivers where me and a couple of other people was always getting all the calls, to now you turn it on and you see 10 to 12 drivers out there, mostly college students,” said Taylor.

Taylor has a full schedule to bring in the new year, but he doesn’t plan to go on the clock until late.

“Oh yes I expect myself and another driver will be driving,” said Taylor. “We’ll go to Watch Night service first and then after Watch Night service, that’s when the people are tanked up anyways because it’ll be over around 12:15 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and so you just start picking them up and dropping them off,” said Taylor.

While it’s likely to be a busy night, Taylor’s not worried, he says most riders know the rules.

“Drunk people are the easiest ones because they’ve already paid for their fair and they know if they do anything to mess up your car then they have to pay for it and that’s almost 100 bucks,” said Taylor.

Taylor said the cash is nice, but in the end he just wants to help keep people safe.
