UM student says service dog banned from classroom

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The University of Mississippi says it’s reviewing a report that a student’s service dog was banned from a classroom.

The Clarion Ledger reported the school last week banned a service dog for allegedly disruptive behavior.

The newspaper reported a freshman who asked not to be identified said she was told by university personnel last week that her brown Labrador, Violet, was no longer welcome because she was “whining excessively” and wandering around the classroom. The student denies that. She would not say why she needs the dog.

University student disability services director Stacey Raycraft said she couldn’t talk about the situation because of student confidentially requirements.

The school’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for University Relations said the school welcomes trained service animals and is reviewing the situation.
