UPDATE: Latest on the accidental shooting in Webster County

WEBSTER COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s a loved one’s worst nightmare, an accidental shooting.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said it happened at the acting Webster County sheriff’s home.

Investigators believe the sheriff’s grandchild was seriously injured.

Law enforcement said an accidental shooting happened here, in Webster County, at the acting sheriff’s home on Mantee Road, Tuesday morning.

Multiple sources told WCBI that Webster County Sheriff Andy McCants’s grandson was accidentally shot in the abdomen after he and his older brother were playing with a gun when it went off.

There was little evidence of police activity at the home, shortly after the accident happened.

The child was taken to the hospital in Eupora and airlifted to another facility.

The child’s condition has not been released.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is filing an incident report.

A Department of Public Safety spokesman says no criminal charges are expected to be filed.
