JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s one of the biggest days where hundreds of state leaders come together to share their vision for the future of Mississippi.

Capital Day is held in Jackson annually.

A variety of state leaders, elected officials and business leaders join together for this year’s Capital Day.

Hosted by the Mississippi Economic Council, it’s the largest legislative event of the year.

“Really just an opportunity for people from all over Mississippi to come in and get an idea of what’s happening from a legislative stand point and what they can expect out of the new session,” said Scott Waller, C.O.O of MEC.

Education, work force development and our state’s infrastructure needs are just a few of the topics discussed by several key note speakers.

Governor Phil Bryant announced his plans to continue the push for high education, despite the constant rise of college tuition.

“We’ve got to put more of our students into higher education, more college graduates, means better careers for them better income. It is difficult and I am concerned about the continued increase in tuition, I think we’re going to have to work with our universities because we can’t just get to the point only where the well off can afford to go to college,” said Governor Phil Bryant.

Finding where that college funding will come from is one of the challenges university leaders face.

“It’s hard to continue to fund universities at the level they should be. Funding per student has gone down consistently. We’re working hard at the university to be as lean and mean as we can. And to find resources so that we can excel in our programs and attract the very best, both in Mississippi and from outside Mississippi because all those students are great resources to build the future of this great state,” said Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, Chancellor of The University of Mississippi.

At least 500 participants were in attendance at this year’s capital day.
