ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Knowing the rules of gun safety can prevent accidents and save lives, especially the lives of children. Four-H Shooting Sports is a national program involving 300 thousand young people and it continues to grow every year. Volunteer instructors and 4-H agents provide firearm safety training for children ages eight to 18.

“We like to get at least two hours of safety training and then we move into the practice on the range, where they get hands-on, which is the 4-H way. Learn by doing,” says Randall Nevin, a Monroe County 4-H Agent.

Participants learn the basics like how to hold a rifle while in the standing position, the kneeling position and the prone position. Dale Stafford says he wants his 10-year daughter Mary to learn gun safety as early as possible.

“Well I just wanted her to know how to use a gun correctly and safely. You never know when you might need that, that usefulness,” says Stafford.

I learned that you should always point it down and always have it on safety,” says Mary Stafford, a 4-H Participant.

After completing classroom training, they’ll learn everything from archery, muzzleloading, and hunting to handling a pistol and rifle. In Aberdeen, LaMonica Peters, WCBI News. >

The children will also compete in a marksmanship competition after training at the range.
