Video: 6 year old gives allowance to hurricane victims
NEW HOPE, Miss. (WCBI)- One 6 year old boy from New Hope has been on a mission to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. He was paid an allowance for household chores and helping out his neighbors. Instead of cashing it in the piggy bank, he sent it to Houston.
Meet 6 year old, Carson Benge. He’s your average kid who works on homework every night, and enjoys catching the football with his two other brothers. He may be a little man, but lately he’s been on a big mission.
“To help Texas,” said Carson.
Carson’s mom, Erin Benge says it started after he saw images online of the devastation from left from Hurricane Harvey. He came home from school and told his mom he wanted to do something to help.
“His exact words to me were he wanted to save Texas,” said Benge.
The family sat down and discussed ideas. Knowing it was a big project for a little man, they decided to focus on working to help one family. So, Carson got to work doing chores around the house and his neighborhood.
“Like pick up toilet paper, cut down a tree and put out the garbage cans,” said Carson.
In six days little Carson raised over $100. Money that went straight to Houston.
“To a six year old, that’s like over a million dollars,” said Benge.
“Some people don’t have houses and food so they have to got to the store to get stuff to replace their stuff,” Carson explained.
Carson also wrote a personalized letter to whoever was getting the money, wishing them well. Family members heading Houston dropped off the envelop of money and the note at North Orange Baptist Church. The cash is helping two families there. Benge says she couldn’t be more proud of her little boy.
“The fact that he came up with this all on his own, then asked me to reach out, not to family because we don’t have a lot of family here, but friends that can help him obtain his goal,” said Benge.
With the mission complete, in the grand scheme of things Benge says this sends the message that you’re never too small or too young to make a difference.
“The message he’s sending to children his age is just amazing. Not only can they do something if they set their mind to it, but hard word does pay off,” said Benge.
