TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A disaster relief agency will be able to help more locals who are still trying to rebuild after April’s tornado, thanks to a donation from the AARP.

This morning, representatives of AARP Mississippi presented a $5,000 check to the American Red Cross in Tupelo.

The state AARP decided to make the donation because so many of its members were impacted by the tornado and its aftermath.

Officials know the recovery is a long and often slow process.

“We wanted Tupelo to know that we knew what they were experiencing, what they were going through and we just wanted to support the American Red Cross in their efforts in helping these people return to normal lifestyles,” Mississippi AARP Representative Bettye Taylor said.

A-A-R-P also donated five thousand dollars to the East Central Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross today in Louisville.
The East Central Chapter covers Winston County, and has been coordinating disaster relief efforts in the area since the April tornado.
