ACKERMAN, Miss.(WCBI)–Ackerman city leaders are a step closer to changing out old water meters for newer ones.

They now have accepted bids from three out of town companies.

The $200,000 project is allowing for the replacement of 850 new water meters. According to Ackerman Mayor Dick Cain, the new meters should give a more accurate reading when scanned by an employee reading the meter from the road.

Bids were taken last Thursday from RG3 Meter Company, McNeil Rhondes, and Baird Contracting Company. Right now it takes two city workers two days to obtain readings from customer homes in the city. When new water meters are installed, it will take one man only three hours to obtain accurate readings.

The company to sign the contract for work to be done will be announced next Tuesday at the mayor and Aldermen meeting at 5:30 pm.
