Video: Alabama Preps For The Tax Free Holiday Weekend
VERNON, Alabama (WCBI) – Shoppers looking to catch a good deal this weekend will be in Alabama for the tax free holiday.
The tax free holiday in Alabama is a little different than Mississippi’s because more items can be bought tax free, but one thing is the same, and that’s saving a few bucks, and businesses in Vernon, Alabama, are wanting to save shoppers even more by having sales on top of paying no sales tax.
Two- thousand residents call Vernon home, and the city wants to make sure those locals know they’ve got what they need without driving those extra miles to find it somewhere else.
“It always affects it a little bit, because when you go to a larger town, you’ve got several choices you can go to, and they have more items sitting out on the shelves that catches your attention when you walk by, and so that’s what we’ve tried to do here in Vernon, is encourage our folks to put out their prime products, especially around this time of the year,” says Mayor Glenn Crawford.
That’s exactly what “That Little Store Somewhere” has been gearing up for. They’re also making everything in the store tax free to bring in even more people to shop.
“We know a lot of people go out of town, but we try to get what they need here locally, so we bring in the extra stuff, and the stuff that they think they maybe can’t get in a local town, and get our shelves stocked, so they can see that kind of stuff here, and know they don’t have to go 30, 40, or 50 miles away. They’ve got it right here in the area,” says That Little Store Somewhere owner, Curt Smith.
It’s something that resident Kellie Kennedy knows and takes advantage of, plus she can see where her money goes.
“It’s really important to help grow, keep the town going to have the, to shop local to help your local community.”
Durham’s Pharmacy Gift Shop Manager Rachel Mcadams, says better deals are found in local shops compared to corporate businesses during the no tax holiday weekend.
“It’s always possible you know, but I don’t think you’re going to get as good of a deal there, than you would to shop local because like I said, we’re doing our sale prices along with our tax free.”
Alabama residents who participate in the shopping holiday will save 9% on purchased items, and those items include school supplies, clothes, and electronics.
