Video: Amory Memorial Day Observance

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – Now that the Veteran’s Memorial of Monroe County is erected, it was only fitting that this year’s patriotic remembrance in Amory was held there.

At the corner of Highway 278 and Fourth Street South in Amory, the names of the fallen from four wars, are respectfully called out.

“I grew up around Bo in the Black Cat down here in Amory and David Harlow, I went to school with him,” said Lyndon Mays, Vietnam Veteran.

A gold mother’s heart is filled with pride and other emotions after losing her 19 year old son.

She can only pause as she and others remember the fallen from World War One, World War Two, The Korean War Conflict, and The War In Vietnam.

“He’ll always live in my heart. I know he is not here but in my heart he is a hero,” said Marvalla Tartt, Vietnam Veteran’s Mother.

“He was a good guy. He graduated Amory High school and left for the army and went to Vietnam,” said Timothy Tartt, Vietnam Veteran’s Brother.

“David got killed in March of 70 while I was over there and Bo got killed in March of 1969,” said Mays.

Veteran Jimmie Bradford clutches the picture of the man who was like a big brother to him.

Bradford was only 8 when he got the news that his friend had been killed in Korea.

“When he was home, had a beautiful black 1946 Ford. Slickest Ford you want to see. J. I. Wallace, J. I. Wallace,” said Bradford.

Those veterans are gone, but their names forever etched on this memorial for all to see and appreciate.

Applications are still being taken for anyone wanting to place a brick on the walkway of the Veterans Memorial of Monroe County in honor of their favorite veteran.
