NESHOBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Republicans and Democrats took the podium at the Neshoba County Fair Thursday morning, campaigning for November’s U.S. Senate race. Democratic candidate Travis Childers gave the crowd reasons why he’s the person they need to vote for. He plans on pushing for comprehensive immigration reform, raising the minimum wage and equal pay for equal work.

“I think that women should get paid the very same money when she does the same work a man does. I think it’s wrong when we pay women 76 cents on the dollar and we pay the man $1. It’s just wrong,” said Childers.

U.S. Senator Thad Cochran says he’ll continue working for Mississippi if he’s elected again by repealing the Affordable Care Act and monitoring our budget.

“We don’t need to spend more than we’re taking in. That’s the problem that’s got to be solved if we continue to enjoy economic growth,” said Sen. Cochran.

The tension from this year’s Republican primary still loomed over the event. Chris McDaniel supporters held signs, shouting as Cochran took the stage. Both Cochran and Childers agreed the bickering must end.

“I’m running on my own and trying to do what’s best for Mississippi. I can’t get side tracked with a lot of political bickering and I’m not up to that. I don’t want to be up in that. I’m not for that,” said Sen. Cochran.

“At some point along the way, we lost civility. We lost our manners and it’s wrong to bring people’s families and friends into these elections. It’s got to stop,” said Childers.

Childers also says he hopes to debate Senator Cochran before November’s election.

Thad Cochran is part of the problem that in Washington, I still can’t beleive the people of Miss voted him in again. The only thing, and I do mean the only thing he’s good at is putting his name on another building.
I’ve voted and supported the Republican party for many years, but can’t do this one. It will make me sick but I’ll vote for a Democrat before I’ll vote for the Cock-Roch.
