VIDEO: Columbus Joining The Relief Efforts

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Area pilots take to the sky Saturday morning to join the relief effort for hurricane victims.

Two air planes landed on a private runway in Columbus, where they filled up with basic necessities and prepared to hit the air.

The sound is deafening, but it’s music to the ears of those most impacted by natural disaster.

“I would love to stay involved and do as much as I can to help out,”said Columbus pilot Vincent Harris.

Harris says after seeing the impression of the storms, he had to help any way he could.

“We don’t really get a lot of this weather, natural disasters. So, for me to be able to donate my time like that, really means a lot to me and is for the betterment of people,”said Harris

The pilots are headed to Florida as apart of a New Orleans based group, Cajun Air Lift.

“This originally started with a bunch of pilots from New Orleans. I saw that they were doing it and so I wanted to get on board to kind of help out, especially after I saw we needed help more down in our region, the South East. I figured I could definitely lend a hand since they were busy with Texas,”said  Regional Coordinator  Elizabeth Poeppelman.

The planes will carry a variety of items including; personal feminine products, diapers, baby formula, and baby bottles.

Poeppelman says thanks to their many partnerships, they were able to compile a list of necessities.

“We have different organizations that we partnered with including Homeland Security and the National Guard through those organizations we find out what the different areas needs.

Cajun Air Lift is also collecting supplies for the virgin islands and Puerto Rico.

The group will continue to collect donations through October 6th.
