COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and the Columbus police department wants to remind residents to keep flames away from the fireworks.

City ordinance forbids fireworks from being launched in the air, and the fine for firing mortar and other explosives is $242 dollars.

Interim police chief Fred Shelton urges citizens to find other alternatives for holiday fun.

Shelton said in a statement, “We want everyone to enjoy the holidays, celebrate New Year’s, but however, if there is a firework show somewhere local then I would just advise people to go there and have fun, but not in your backyard and not in the city limits.”

Shelton also wants to remind residents that shooting a firearm to celebrate is also against the law, and the fine for that is $412 dollars.
