COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Several gathered this morning in front of the Columbus Police Department to pay tribute to those who put their life on the line everyday.

The flag was lowered half staff followed by roll call of those who have lost their lives in the last year.

Two wreaths were placed on the monument in honor of fallen officers including Tupelo officer Sergeant Gale Stauffer who was killed in the line of duty December 23, 2013 after responding to a bank robbery.

Columbus Interim Chief of Police, Tony Carelton spoke on behalf of his family along with other officers throughout the state.

“A fallen officer has lost his life serving what greater honor or what greater duty do we have so it’s important to recognize them as well as their families for the sacrifice that they gave,” says Interim Chief of Police Tony Carelton.

The two Lowndes County deputies who were wounded earlier this year were also recognized for their bravery.
