Video: Elementary School Dedicates “Sprout House” In Memory Of Hank Boerner

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Students at Tupelo’s Lawndale Elementary will have an outdoor classroom where they can learn about farming and healthy eating.

The Lawndale Greenhouse was dedicated  at the school.  The greenhouse, also known as “The Sprout House,”  was paid for by a grant from Toyota, along with proceeds from an annual event called “Boerner Be Wild.”

That 5 k has been held in memory of Hank Boerner, director of NMMC’s wellness center, who passed away in 2012.

The greenhouse will be filled with a variety of plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs.

“So I think the important thing is we have this incredible outdoor learning laboratory that stands as a tribute to Hank’s love for all citizens of Tupelo, especially the youngest, so I think incredible things are going to happen here,” said Donna Loden, of “Growing Healthy Waves,” which helps organize healthy events for TPSD schools.

A group of Tupelo High School students have taken on the greenhouse as their senior project.  They helped collect thousands of seeds from “Native Son Farms” for the greenhouse.
