TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It has taken nearly two years, but the Elvis Presley Birthplace Trail in Tupelo is now finished.

Dignitaries gathered Tuesday morning to cut the ribbon marking the completion of the multi million dollar project, that connects downtown Tupelo to the Birthplace, with sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks and landscaping.

Although the roadwork did cause minor inconveniences for businesses, officials expect traffic to pick up throughout the area.

“I just think it’s a wonderful quality of life environment, trees, when you have these boundaries with sidewalks, they feel safe, secure, happy and it gives a great environment for people to stroll around downtown,” said Debbie Brangenberg, Downtown Main Street Association.

The project was funded through a combination of local, state and federal funding.
