LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The City of Louisville Fire Department and the local Boy Scout Troop have teamed together to make the operations of your Fire Department more efficient and take a step further towards providing better services to the community as a whole. The Boy Scouts are painting the bonnets of fire hydrants to represent a range of gallons of water per minute available if needed to extinguish fires. This allows for a visual perspective for the Fire Department to make decisions that will allow for a more efficient operation in the event of an emergency.
This is how National Fire Protection Association color coding system is set up:
Red topped hydrants 0-499 gallons per minute
Orange topped hydrants 500-999 gallons per minute
Green topped hydrants 1000-1499 gallons per minute
Blue topped hydrants 1500 and above gallons per minute
