WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI)–Can you imagine, Spring is just around the corner. But already the short winter has produced an excessive amount of fleas and seed ticks.
When it comes to protecting your pet from the unwanted insect bites, know this….there have really been no break in flee and tick activity.
“The ticks and flees have not really even had a dormant period. We are still finding dogs that came in that we’ll put the flee and tick prevention on or the clients are feeling of them, and they find a tick as on them even now,” said Dr. Karen Emerson/Emerson Animal Hospital.
Infestation by these insects can cause serious health issues.
“The fact that if you see one seed tick there is probably a lot more because they lay up to 45 eggs between feedings. So they can jump from you to your dog,” said Karen Emerson.
There are times when, if left untreated, bites from fleas and ticks can also be fatal when it comes to your four legged friend.
“Ehrlichia, I have not seen a lot of lyme and rocky mountain fever, but I have had several clients come in that have been hunting that have actually gotten lyme disease through ticks,” said Karen Emerson.
Emerson has advice for pet owners concerned with diseases affecting their pet and themselves.
“Have them on flee and tick prevention. And then if you as a human are going out hunting or you are going to be going out into a wooded area put on pants and wear long sleeves in wooded areas. Always check yourself when you get back in. They like to hide in little hole and crevices,” said Dr. Karen Emerson.
In addition to medicines, a good flee and tick collars is effective as well.
