VIDEO: Friend Goes The Extra Mile For Friend Battling Cancer

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)- A community is rallying behind the Usry family of West Point after their 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Lila Usry is in the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota getting treatment. Her biggest fear was losing her hair, but she quickly learned her best friend back home in West Point, wasn’t going to let her lose her hair alone.

“I’m shaving my head for my best friend Lila,” said Willa Greenan in a FaceTime video to Lila.

It’s been a friendship six years in the making. 11 year old Willa Greenan and Lila live across the street from one another.

“She’s my best friend in the whole world,” said Greenan.

Mid November, the word cancer came in to play.

“It was very devastating. Shocking. You know we weren’t expecting that at all,” said Willa’s mom Shannon Greenan.

From teaching Lila how to ride a bike, setting up lemonade stands, and even being Lila’s personal tooth fairy, the two stuck together.

“Every time she gets a loose tooth she’d run and say, “Willa I have a loose tooth and I need you to come pull it.”  I would tell her I’m just going to wiggle it but sometimes it’d just fall out cause it was so loose,” said  Greenan.

The two are inseparable. After learning her best friend was about to embark on a scary journey, she wanted Lila to know she’d be right beside her, just as she always has been.

“I wasn’t worried about it because I knew it’d help Lila. It’d make her feel better about losing her hair,” said Greenan.

In the FaceTime video you can see Lila’s face light up as her best friend takes on buzzing her hair with her.

“It’s a very selfless thing to do, especially for that age,” said Willa’s mom.

With each clip Willa says she thought of Lila. Be brave Lila is circling social media and she has a whole city fighting with her.

“The whole town is praying. There’s been prayer circles. It’s just been great,” said Shannon Greenan.

So far, Lila has had 10 days straight of chemo and is expected to have another eight days in the coming weeks. Willa is just ready for her best friend back.

“I can’t wait until she gets home and things get back to normal,” said Greenan.

It’ll be at least six months before Lila and her family comeback home.

A benefit will be held Wednesday the 13th at Episcopal Church, West Point.
