COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)—As time goes on new property becomes old and repairs become necessary.

However, some owners don’t put in the work needed to make the land safe.

The Columbus inspection department is offering an easier way for people to report those type of issues.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could see issues in your area and instantly report them?

We’ll not to worry….Now…. The Columbus inspection department has an app for that.

Code Enforcement Officer Tomarris Jones says,” They can hit new issue and they have the option to take a picture.”

It’s called GoRequest.

“And what it is, is umm when the residents are out on the go and they see a code violation they can go into this app; download it, take a picture of the code violation, put a description out there and this app has GPS and camera features in it so when they send that request to me; I know exactly where that complain or code violation is,” says Jones

Victoria Bailey Wcbi reporter says,”And it’s homes just like these that the Columbus inspection department want residents to reach out to them about using GoRequest.”

Once you take the picture and send the request, it shows up at the inspection department within minutes. Inspectors try to make it to the area in question 48 hours after they were notified.

Code Violations can be anything from an over grown yard, rundown homes or buildings, abandon buildings or a junky yard.

Jones says,”Once they send the request to me, I can actually go out to see if that request is valid. If it’s valid then the resident can see the whole process from when I open that case up to when I close it.”

If you aren’t an app user, the inspection department offers a more traditional way for residents to get involved.

“If they chose not to download the app then they also can go to the city website where they can put a code violation in.” says Jones.

You don’t have to be a Columbus resident to use the app.

Gorequest is available on iphones and androids.
