STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Most of their days are spent planning and building. But, members of manufacturing and furniture industries were getting a pep talk from the state’s CEO, Governor Phil Bryant about their role in Mississippi’s economy.

“I think we’re gonna see the furniture industry use technology into the future and advance many manufacturing techniques that are being developed here at the institute and MS State University,” said Governor Bryant.

Right now the state’s manufacturing and furniture industries account for around 12% of Mississippi’s workforce, a number Bryant says will continue to grow.

“The furniture industry in the State of Mississippi employs about 18,000 people. We’re so proud of Toyota and a great job they’re doing so this is about 9 Toyota’s. If you look at 18,000 jobs that’s how big this industry is and it’s developing everyday,” said Governor Bryant.

Matt Erskine, Deputy Assistant of the U.S. Department of Commerce also thinks the magnolia state plays a big part in the industry’s future.

“What studies have shown is that manufacturing actually is probably the best industry sector for middle class jobs and middle class economic security and so this really means great things I think for the long term prosperity of this region,” said Erskine.

And thanks to the Franklin Furniture Institute teaching future business leaders, Bryant believes Mississippi State is leading the way in helping our State’s economy soar.

“Mississippi and Franklin Institute have done such a great job of bringing furniture into the 21st century and we’re gonna push hard to support it at the state wide level,” said Governor Bryant.

The summit also included lessons on global manufacturing and consumer buying behavior.
