VIDEO: Guns and Ammo Tax Free For the Weekend

Miss. (WCBI) – With less than two weeks until dove season in Mississippi, hunters are setting their sites on shopping.

People in the market for a new gun get a pass on taxes this weekend.

Tax free is a pretty big deal for people who are in the market for guns and ammo.

With this expectation of more business for the next two days, owners are displaying all that they can to see that they make the most of this weekend.

“As it’s come on, you know, we’ve started to put things on sale during sales tax weekend, and of course this year is bigger than ever,” said Gary Dedeaux, owner of Gary’s Pawn and Gun.

Pawn shops, super centers, and outdoor stores will be selling guns and ammo like they always have, only with a catch, it’s tax free.

“When you give them a tax free, I mean, that’s 7%, so when you start doing that, that’s a good time to start doing specials already, along with your 7% off. It would be a good time to move merchandise,” said Sales Rep. for Western Auto Store, Odie Keen.

Which is exactly what Gary’s Pawn and Gun is doing, not just with the firearms and ammo. The accessories are tax free too.

“Most everything qualifies. You know, the biggest thing is ammunition, optics, scopes, and firearms, and there’s a lot of accessories, slings and scope mounts and things like this that attach to lasers and stuff like that,” said Dedeaux.

No taxes along with these deals makes purchasing a gun seem more appealing.

“I think we’ll have a good many people coming in that normally wouldn’t because of the incentive and because it is dove season just around the corner. We’re getting our shells in; we’re getting our guns out. We’ve got things going along,” said Keen.

The tax free weekend starts as soon as the clock strikes midnight .
