COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Hundreds of students gathered at Heritage Academy High School this morning to participate in an academic competition.

More than 475 middle and high school students converged on the Heritage Academy campus, to go head-to-head in the Academic Betterment Competition.

“It’s a very neat service provided by MAIS (MS Assoc of Independent Schools) and the kids enjoy it. Our students enjoy the camaraderie that they get from interacting with other students in the same subject areas that they are interested in. For the most part, the subject areas that they are testing in are things that they have high interest in. So it’s a very good competition for our students,” says Barrett Donahoe, Heritage Academy’s Athletic Director.

The annual competition tests students on a wide range of subjects including math, science and history. Students say it’s a great way to gauge their knowledge and skills.

“I kind of learned how I compare to where I should be and how far I should be in the subject I took, Algebra 2,” says Heritage Academy 11th grader Nicholas Ellis.

Heritage Academy student Megill Imes says the competition helped her learn testing skills.

“I’ve gotten to meet a lot of people doing it. I’ve learned that I need to prepare for testing because it covers everything we’ve done the whole school year no matter what the subject you take and it’s just a good experience,” says Imes.

Eleventh grader Lizzie Sansing has participated year after year at Heritage Academy.

“I’ve taken the test like 5 years in a row in different subjects and it’s an honor to be chosen so many years,” says Sansing.

The ABC challenge tests students in 37 different subjects every year.

The contest is sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools.
