VIDEO: Historic Mayoral Election in Eupora

EUPORA, Miss. (WCBI News) – It’s been over one hundred years since the founding of the city of Eupora.

Now, for the first time in its history, an African American has been elected to the position of mayor.

Lamar Dumas is the victor of the recent mayoral race by a close margin of two votes.

During his term, he plans to make his hometown a great place to work and live.

After election results were certified Monday morning, Dumas became the mayor-elect of the city of Eupora.

Dumas is honored by the historic win and see this as an opportunity to bring his city closer.

“We are a strong, united community,” said Dumas. “Sometimes we are a little bit distant, but I think when time calls we come together. I think the time is now that we are called to come together.”

Though excited for the opportunity to serve as the mayor, Dumas is not taking anything for granted and is ready to get straight to business.

“I was somewhat excited about winning the election, but I understand that winning an election requires a lot of work. And so, I think myself and the board of aldermen will come together, the same way as the community has come together, and we rally to try to be a better and greater thing for the community,” said Dumas.

Dumas is a life-long resident of the city of Eupora, and during his term as mayor there are some things that he has seen over the years that he’d like to see improved

“Definitely our school system. It’s a fairly good school system, and we expect to work together to get it improved,” said Dumas. “That way, we can send our residents to work anywhere and thrive wherever they go.”

Dumas also wants to restore and rehabilitate old buildings and bring jobs into the city. The goal: attracting newcomers and keeping current residents at home.

“It’s things like this that we are going to try to make our community more desirable for the people that visit it and also those who inhabit it,” Dumas said.

Dumas hopes to accomplish his plans with the help of the board of aldermen, the citizens, and also his faith.

“I think as prayers go up, answers come down, so we’re going to be God-fearing and thrive forward in our community,” said Dumas.

Dumas will be sworn in to office on July 1st.
