VIDEO: Humane Society Facing Full Capacity

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Over 75 cats and kittens are in need of a home this evening…

The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society is at full capacity for its felines.

It’s “kitten season” which means…

“When the weather is really warm, cats are going in season and they’re just all in heat,” says Director Karen Johnwick.

One female cat can have more than 100 babies in its lifetime. The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society is currently facing the result of this problem.

Last month alone, the shelter took in more than 300 cats and kittens. Now, they’re almost pushing capacity again at over 75 cats.

Johnwick asks the community to do your part- spay and neuter your pets.

“We have a low cost spay neuter service and we just push it, and every Wednesday we’re doing it, this past Wednesday we did 24,” says Johnwick.

The clinic only charges 35 dollars for the surgery. Johnwick says as a pet owner, you must be responsible

“There’s only so many homes, you can only get so many adopted. We’re doing everything we can to save as many as we can, but we can only do as much as we can do! And we can only do what we can with the help of the community so please do your part, please spay and neuter,” says Johnwick.
