COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus City Councilman Kabir Karriem will now represent District 41 in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Esther Harrison qualified to run but passed away earlier this year.

Karriem qualified for the race and was the only candidate on the ballot. The race drew more interest after two candidates started write in campaigns, but Karriem cruised to an easy victory Tuesday night.

Now, he’s ready to tackle a few issues in Jackson.

“Fully funding education, making sure our women are paid the same as men, equal pay for equal work. and something that is dear to my hear is prison reform, making sure that people who have paid their debt to society have a chance to take care of themselves and their families.”

Karriem hopes to finish a few projects with the city council before taking on his new role.
