VIDEO: Learning The Importance Of Renters Insurance
WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Disaster can strike at a moments notice.
State Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney spent the day in West Point discussing the importance having insurance.
“I tell them all the time, if you live off campus get renters insurance it’s extremely important. Renters insurance is very cheap,” said Chaney.
Renters insurance covers a person’s property inside the apartment where they live. That includes theft and damage to your belongings.
West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson says in light of the recent incidents in the area, that type of insurance can help fire victims get back on their feet.
“Recently what’s been on our mind is the terrible that took place in Starkville and it’s good to have Commissioner Chaney here to talk about insurance. I encourage anyone and everyone to especially home owners but those especially who are renting to have renters insurance because you never know when a fire will strike,” said Robinson.
Chaney says having the coverage is important, but you must know what you’re buying.
“Read the policy. ask the agent, if you’re not certain ask the person who sold you the policy. If you buy it online read it. You have to do the research spend some time because it’s a lot of money on the line for you,” said Chaney.
Chaney says his office has learned from past disasters on how to keep rates in line and the impact it can have on the industry.
“We have worked a plan in Mississippi that seems to be working to keep insurance rates low. Catastrophic events are happening all across the nation, but our rates have not gone up simply because we’ve done some things right in the state of Mississippi, after Katrina Lesson learned and lessons applied,” said Chaney.
Chaney says there have been 42 fire deaths in the state in 2017.
This weekend’s time change is a good reminder to replace the batteries in your smoke detector.
