VERONA, Miss. (WCBI) – Elementary students in Lee County schools are getting a valuable safety tool this week. The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services is handing out multi-purpose helmets to Lee County elementary students. It’s part of the “Use Your Brain” program which encourages people to wear helmets when riding bicycles, skateboarding , and other activities.

“Every time I go into the schools, especially since summer is coming up I ask the kids if they will be riding a bicycle or skateboard or scooter, of course everybody raises their hand and this is the target group we are  wanting them to get used to wearing these helmets.”

Falls are the second leading cause of brain injury in the state.  The program is funded through fees from DUIs and moving violations.
