COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–In light of the mass killings at a church in South Carolina, the controversy over the images on the Mississippi state flag has resurface once again.

Many embracing the present day flag of the Magnolia State with the inclusion of it’s crossbar and stars say its all about the heritage of a people. However, as many consider the mass killings in South Carolina and a young man who embraced the confederate battle flag, there is an outcry for its removal.

“I think that it is important and imperative that we extend condolences and prayers to those victims who have given up their lives really as martyrs for a cause they did not even invite,” said Tyrone Ellis/MS State Representative.

“The young man that did the shooting was obviously deranged and he was an avoided racist,” said Commander David Horne/Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Commander David Horne is one pro confederate flag advocate wanting the state flag left alone.

“Part of our heritage and history,The men from Mississippi that lost their lives under the flag and they served with distinction and honor,” said Commander Horne.

Both in South Carolina and Mississippi the debate seems to keep recurring.

“We have in the past legislation. We, and I was co sponsor, we have introduced legislation in the past to address the flag issue to no avail,” said Ellis.

“Thats what the people voted for and thats what South Carolina should do. If the people vote they vote it in or out, thats the way it should be,” said Commander Horne.

While in deep contemplation at unity park in Starkville, Ellis is calling for countrywide dialogue.

“Until we sit at the table with one another and talk about it face to face just as you and I talk about issues whether we agree or not we have to talk about certain things,” said Tyrone Ellis.

“Slavery is unfortunate but it turned out well for those who are descendants who remain in this country,” said Horne.
